Buy or Lease? Which is Right for You?

Here at Volkswagen of Athens we?re often asked about the benefits of either buying a new Volkswagen or leasing one. As it turns out there are advantages to each, depending on your personal needs and desires. Some folks want to drive the latest new Volkswagen every two or three years, while others get so attached to their car that they couldn?t dream of returning it just as it?s getting broken in.

Whether you?re commuting from Jefferson, using your car for a small business in Loganville, or just driving from Winder to Athens for work, these are factors that can help you decide whether to buy or lease. Let?s run down a list of the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods of financing and identify when one is more appropriate than the other.

2 years or 24,000 miles*

Think of it as total peace of mind for as long as your VW has that new car smell. And for a couple more years after that.

Advantages of Buying Your New Volkswagen

When you choose to buy your new Volkswagen, the obvious benefit is that you will own it outright when you?ve paid off the loan amount. And since it?s a Volkswagen, it will still be going strong for years. Also, the initial cost of buying vs. leasing is usually lower, and sometimes the entire amount can be financed. Another advantage is that you can drive the car for as many miles as you need or want, whereas a lease comes with mileage restrictions. Finally, at the end of the loan period, you will have a vehicle that is yours and that still has quite a bit of value.

Disadvantages of Buying

When you choose to buy any new vehicle, you are responsible for coming up with the entire purchase amount. For most people this means financing. The terms of the loan may extend out for 5 years or even longer. That means interest expenses on top of whatever down payment is required. Then, at the end of the loan period you own a vehicle that is probably near the end of its warranty period. Now, with a Volkswagen this isn?t as much of a problem as with some other cars but still, any repairs will come out of your pocket.

Advantages of Leasing Your New Volkswagen

If you decide to lease, you get the advantage of using a new Volkswagen without the expense of ownership. Lease payments are typically lower on a monthly basis than buying and financing. This is because the car will have a value at the end of the lease period (called the residual value), and that amount is deducted from what you are financing in a lease. Essentially you?re only paying for the depreciation cost of the vehicle. Also, if you use the car primarily for business, the lease payments can be tax deductible. So, if you like the idea of having a new Volkswagen every few years, leasing may be right for you.

Disadvantages of Leasing

When you lease you are essentially paying for the use of a vehicle that someone else owns. As such, the owner (the leasing company) has some restrictions that they put on how you use their car. A leased vehicle will have mileage restrictions; usually around 12,000 miles allowed per year. If you drive more than that, it can cost you extra at the end of the lease period. Also, you can?t make any modifications to a car that you are leasing, even adding new audio components. Finally, at the end of a lease you need to decide whether to keep the car and pay the residual, or turn it in and lease or buy a new one ? and start all over again.

The Right Choice for You

Visual inspection of airbag system; engine: change oil and replace oil filter; rear window: check cleaning nozzle functionality (if applicable); service interval display: reset (if applicable); service sticker: enter the date of the next service on the service sticker and apply to the driver's side door pillar; tires: rotate front to rear; check for damage and function for windshield washers, headlight cleaning system, and wiper blades; check fluid level and add if necessary.
